Challenge

Having worked with us on previous projects, Fonterra approached us for a solution to two major projects. The first was in their dry goods area. They needed to monitor the temperature of their milk powder. Stored milk powder can not exceed temperature thresholds in order to maintain quality for export. The second project was to ensure and maintain an efficient supply chain from on farm milk vats to processing factories. The project required robust on farm hardware that captured milk inlet temperature, milk vat temperature, agitator motor run feedback and vat volume.

Solution

The solution to the milk powder temperature requirement was a ‘bread and butter’ job for Halo Systems. Our team designed and installed an easy to install logger. The requirement for ease of deployment was because of restrictions to access the install locations and the requirement for a speedy delivery. The loggers were designed with magnetic feet so they could be easily installed by Fonterra’s dry store employees and could be remotely commissioned to the dashboard by the Halo team. Another requirement was for the temperature and humidity probes to be annually calibrated. This was achieved by making the probes interchangeable, with new probes dispatched annually with calibration documentation. Fonterra’s milk vat monitoring project required us to develop robust on farm hardware that captured milk inlet temperature, milk vat temperature, agitator motor run feedback and vat volume. The Halo system also generates alerts to on farm workers if exceptions are met that will affect the milk quality, this data is shared via API with Fonterra for management of supply chain and milk quality.

Result

“Getting real time updates of farmers' milking times and volumes is allowing us to improve the utilisation of our tanker fleet. This allows us to keep our tanker fleet productive for longer periods, as farmers milking times adjust throughout the season. This increase in productivity allows us to get the same amount of work done, with less tankers overall."
